Why are we always silent?

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

This poem from the Nazi Germany clearly shows what we are lacking- the guts to stand up. Why are we always silent?

People die on roads after meeting an accident. What do we do? Make videos and gather around to see the tragic scene. A mob attacks Africans out of sheer hatred. What do we do? Nothing. A girl faces harassment and eve teasing in front of us. What do we do? Keep silent. And act like we don't know anything.

We read news about people being killed by the so-called gau-rakshaks. We keep silent because, "Not my brother." We hear that a girl was raped. We are enraged for a moment and then we change the TV channel. "Not related to me." We read about riots, people killed, houses burnt. But "Not my family."
We are actually the most tolerant species.

But we are not always so tolerant. We shout out for the most petty things. The government bans porn and we are head over heels. The CEO of Snapchat says something and we start abusing him. A tennis star from a country where cricket is not so popular says that she doesn't know who Sachin is. We get mad over her.

We have still not realized what is more important to us. Should we stand up against the CEO of an organization for what he said privately or should we get together against the social evils spread in our society? We should get our priorities sorted.
Stand up or you will be left alone.
