Superstition: An epidemic built on Ignorance

'Superstition is the religion of feeble minds'
Superstition is the belief in supernatural influences especially as leading to good or bad omen.It is true that in the era science has made great advancement but still superstition hold immense sway over people's daily lives.A vast section of people are victim of superstition for their ignorance even in those fields where the light of science has already reached. We all have heard our elders telling us not to crossover child as it would hinder his growth but the fact  is they might end up injuring him.
Closed wells are abodes of evil spirits so no one should go near them, now we know that the poisonous gases that come out of it are likely to cause a great damage to mankind.Even we are advised not to sleep with our head towards north not because it invites ghost or death, because our body's magnetic field become completely asymmetric to earth's magnetic field leading to heart attack.Seeing one eyed man early in the morning is considered highly inauspicious and so do carrying pickles, oil during journey.Such superstitions are not only believed by illiterate, unenlightened, orthodox people but also by highly qualified professionals. These things are not only peculiar in India alone but even in the world. The so called civilized and elite person look upon 13 as the unlucky number.Man's intellect is baffled by the numerous accidents and unforseen misfortune that will lead to unknown dangers but the evil effect to superstition mostly affect the illiterate people.
The superstitious belief in magical power to cure diseases often take a heavy toll over human life. The system 'sati' was a cruel superstition which is now abolished but 'witchcraft' is still prevailing among the ignorant masses.
Lack of awareness and illiteracy are the main reason for superstition to thrive. The serious challenge that we face is to bring scientific outlook in our minds.Various seminars, debates and discussions should be organised to throw light on the need to abolish superstitions from the society.Social media should be used as a major platform to spread awareness about the ill effects of superstitions. The eradication of this evil practice calls for a countrywide campaign involving various social activists, celebrities, eminent personalities.A remarkable role is played by Narendra Dabholkar in the enforcement of anti superstition law in maharashtra. However mere amendments in law cannot ensure a permanent solution to this persistent problem. The real change will occur when everyone will give up on their obsolete ideas and contribute to the real progress of the society.
