Primarily 4 kinds of stations can be seen in India:

  • Station:

A station is a place where a train stops for a few minutes for passengers to get in/out of the train, or for freight to be carried in a train.

  • Junction:

A junction is a station which has at least three different routes for trains. For a train coming in from a route, there should be at least two more routes for it to leave the station, only then it is called a junction.

  2.  Ghaziabad Junction
  3.  Howrah Junction

  • Central

The busiest station of multiple stations in a city or district is called the Central. For example, Kanpur Central (CNB). It is usually very large and a large number of trains visit it every day.

Although there are centrals in our country, still it is not necessary to have a central in a district having multiple railway stations.
